Welcome to Osenkaku. There are 4 buildings in this Traditional Ryokan. The main guest room buildings at Osenkaku are the "Honkan" (original building) and the "Higashikan" (east building). The Honkan is a 3 story wooden building with 16 guest rooms and each room has its own private toilet. The Higashikan is a 5 story concrete building with 21 guest rooms, they all come with a private toilet and 5 has a private bath. 24 hours a day.The smaller building is the "Dai-ichi Bekkan" (annex) - it is a 2 story wooden building with 6 guest rooms. There are 4 large outdoor hot spring baths for the guests at Osenkaku. One is for only women and three are mixed, they have a dress for women to wear if you feel uncomfortable. All of the guest rooms at Osenkaku are Japanese style, and the guests are served fresh river fish and fresh seasonal vegetables with their meals, which are eaten in private dining areas. Attention: Please bring enough cash to pay your bills and for other possible expenses before you get on the train and go to Osenkaku, as there are very few ATMs in the area.

The greeting staff at the entrance is very nice and drove us to the actual location. But the greeting staff in the other part did not bother to help us with our luggage which is still understandable, yet the staff did not seem to bother to lead us to the room and only provided us a map and we had to look for our way in this huge onsen site for more than 20 minutes and got lost. The outdoor onsen was quite atmospheric but due to the weather and the snow we did not experience a second time to have a fair review, please do not go the indoor ones though. Even convenience store provided much better options of food with that price range. Room was fair and the water boiler welcomed us with unknown substances which we had to ask the very nice restaurant staff for extra bottles of water. The hotel is very commercial and packed with foreign tourists though it left me wondering why proportionally very few Japanese locals seem to appreciate this 'traditional ryokan'.

What a great Onsen! Excellent for a winter stay. The cold air combined with the hot water made for a fantastic experience. Clean, very friendly, beautiful location. The Japanese dinner was delicious. As for the breakfast, the guest have the choice between a western and a Japanese breakfast. Make sure to take the Japanese breakfast, it was delicious!
