My brother and I stayed at Shimizu for 2 nights in the fall. The staff was excellent and extremely helpful. They even brought iced tea as we returned to our room! We also never had a more peaceful night's rest in a city before. We heard NOTHING from our room and it was very relaxing. Calligraphy was the evening activity we chose to do and even took the pictures home. Definitely stay here.

A really enjoyable stay - the rooms and staff are terrific. The only flaw might be that the walls are thin, so ask for a corner room if possible. Please ignore the food rating, as we didn't eat at the ryokan.

We stayed here a couple of times. Our room at the ground floor was bigger and a little more interesting (with a small garden area) compared to the room upstairs which we got on our second visit, but both rooms were perfectly clean and comfortable. Overall the building was small, not exactly exotic, but had a pleasant, cozy feel. It's also in a very quiet area while still remaining within comfortable walking distance to Kyoto Train Station. There is no dinner, and the optional breakfast was simple but fairly tasty. There is also an indoor japanese shared bath that can be privately reserved, giving us the option of ending our days of tired walking in relaxing dips. Like most of the people we interacted with in Japan, the staff were exceedingly polite. But unlike most of the people we interacted with in Japan, they were relatively comfortable speaking English. They also did their best to be helpful, always politely asking about our sightseeing plans while sending us off in the morning, and ever eager to furnish us with whatever relevant maps and information brochures they happen to have in stock. While we have stayed in more interesting ryokans before in Japan, none of them were quite as navigable for an English speaker as Shimizu was. For all practical purposes Shimizu was an excellent accomodation. Highly recommended especially if you speak English and not Japanese.

Me and my friend Christina stayed in this lovely ryokan when we stayed in Kyoto. I would recommend staying here to any traveller looking for a good base in the city. The staff are lovely and can speak english well and have really useful maps of the city to help you get around. You can hire bikes for a very good price too. The beds were so comfortable (I'm seriously considering getting a futon back home!) and the room was well appointed, with lovely tatami mats and slippers. A try of the hot japanese style bath is highly recommended! I would definitely stay here again if I came to Kyoto. Top marks and a great price to boot.

the staff especially the host are very helpful and kind~ during our stay, they recommended us many useful tips to visit like restaurant and places. I strongly recommend the clean and neat public bath (actually we used it privately).

Loved it, didn't stay for long but still had a great time being in Shimizu. Fantastic location, very close to Kyoto station, really friendly staff who were really helpful (even provided a map around the area of what to do and eat).
