Okunoyu Ryokan is a beautiful & peaceful ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen. The ryokan grounds are beautifully landscaped and quiet. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Our room was clean, spacious and the futons were comfortable. There were multiple baths to use at the ryokan. The breakfast and dinner meals were delicious. It was recommended by the ryokan/japaneseguests.com to take a taxi from Aso Station to the ryokan, which made it getting to the ryokan stress free. The taxi cost ~8,000yen for the 30-40 minute drive. Our taxi driver chatted with us all the way to the ryokan -- sharing the history of the Aso region and even stopping at a lookout point so we could get photos of the surrounding area . When it was time to leave, the the Ryokan provided a free shuttle to the bus stop. Note: The train between Aso Station and Kumamoto was not running when we were there, due to damage done by the 2016 earthquake.
