The building was lovely and the accommodations were good, as was the food. For the price, we didn’t feel it was exceptional, but we are also not familiar with the standards and expectations of travel with this type of accommodation as we are foreign. For families, especially with a range of ages, it seemed like a good place for everyone to be comfortable and well-taken care of. One day was a bit confusing as I was sick and the weather was very bad and I wanted to rest I’m the room after a long travel, but it was apparent that we were supposed to vacate the premises after breakfast and not return until the open hours in the early evening. Perhaps if my Japanese was better, I could have explained further, but it seemed to upset the order, so we relented. Directions from GPS were not straight forward as you must drive through the pedestrian zone of Shirakawa which is only open to vehicles at certain times and the GPS would not reroute based on this. Coming over the White Road was a nice trip and there is a nice river trail to walk on and a lovely looking camp site across the river to explore with some more paved and natural walking paths. It was closed in late October, but enjoyable to walk through.

Having never traveled to this part of Japan before, I was a bit nervous about what we would find. I was even more nervous due to the fact that I was bringing my parents and my son, so this had to appeal to all ages! My parents are EXTREMELY well traveled, so pleasing them was very important to me! Well, I need not have worried at all. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were abundantly well cared for by the staff (who even accommodated my soy allergy!), enjoyed a fabulous onsen experience, slept extremely well, ate wonderfully prepared foods (both dinner and breakfast), and just enjoyed how BEAUTIFUL the place was! It is hard to tell from the map just what you are in for, but I assure you it was magical. It was so awesome, it even made my PARENT'S FAVORITE list! And I assure you, that is no small feat. :) Excellent in every way, I hope to stay here again soon!

It was our first ryokan experience. I would say, it exceeded our expectation. From the hospitality, food, and atmosphere of the room, I could say Tosuke no Yu Fujiya was exceptional. The only thing that bothered me was the indoor onsen for man. There was greenish algae. It seems there is lack of maintenance there since the onsen is opened 24hour. I think it requires periodical cleaning.
