Hot springs have a very long history in Japan, and they are an intimate part of Japanese culture. There are over 3,000 "onsen" ,or hot springs, in Japan. Many can be found at the ryokans available on Japanese Guest Houses.

From Yudanaka train station, take a bus to Kanbayashi Onsen Bus Stop (a 20 minute bus ride). Then you must walk 2 km (30-40 minutes) to the ryokan. It gets dark quickly here and there are no lights along the road leading to the ryokan. You must check-in by 16:00. Another route is to take a bus from JR Nagano train station. From JR Nagano train station go through the East Exit to Bus Stop 3. Get on the bus bound for Shiga-Kogen. Get off the bus at Kanbayashi Onsen Bus Stop. It is about a 40 minute bus ride and the fare is 1,300 yen. From JR Nagano train station the buses leave at 9:10, 10:10, 11:20, 12:45.
