Hot springs have a very long history in Japan, and they are an intimate part of Japanese culture. There are over 3,000 "onsen" ,or hot springs, in Japan. Many can be found at the ryokans available on Japanese Guest Houses.
It is a 90 minute bus ride from JR Sapporo train station bus terminal to Lake Shikotsu. From Lake Shikotsu bus terminal it is a 20 minute ride to Marukoma Onsen (Hot Spring). There is a pick-up service from the Lake Shikotsu bus terminal to Marukoma Ryokan.
