Okinawa consists of over 100 islands, and it is a popular destination for those wishing to escape the Japanese cities and experience long, sandy beaches; excellent coral reefs; and lush vegetation. The main island is "Okinawa-Honto" (or simply Okinawa), and it is the most populated island because of the capital city of Naha and the presence of the American military bases. There are a number of historical attractions including Shuri-jo (pictured below) and war memorials in the south from the Battle of Okinawa. From Okinawa, visitors can go and explore the outer islands to "get away from it all" and see the best this area has to offer including wonderful beaches, terrific diving spots, and lush tropical vegetation.
