Hot springs have a very long history in Japan, and they are an intimate part of Japanese culture. There are over 3,000 "onsen" ,or hot springs, in Japan. Many can be found at the ryokans available on Japanese Guest Houses.

Genmyoan Ryokan’s exclusive hill-top position overlooks the famous Amanohashidate, known in ancient tales as a fallen bridge to heaven. The singular beauty of Amanohashidate imbues our refined atmosphere with serenity. Inside, Genmyoan emanates by-gone elegance through our exceptional attention to traditional detail. Experience a sense of past evoked by service staff in kimono, old artistic treasures on display, and
exquisite tea-house craftsmanship.
In 1393, the shogun Ashikaga came on a pilgrimage to this hill and was greatly moved by the view. He thereupon suggested the name “Genmyo” for the spot, as it means a feeling beyond the earthly or ordinary. When Genmyoan
Ryokan was founded in 1937, the idea came naturally of creating an atmosphere in which one’s everyday life and cares could be left behind. The inn has drawn many distinguished guests over its history, from artists and literary figures to the Imperial family.
