Nice place, very remote from the civilization, gorgeous valley, river, onsen and the surrounding nature.

Wow. What a wonderful snow covered wonderland in the middle of the mountains. Traditional ryokan with 4 hot springs to warm up. It took 3 trains and a bus from Shin Aomori station to get there but was well worth the journey. Totally recommend this onsen. The information from Jillian at japaneseguesthouses.com was totally reliable and accurate. Many thanks to him for the recommendation.

The journey to Aoni was quite challenging for me since I had a huge luggage but the staff were accommodating and helpful. The onsen itself was great with a decent variety of baths which guests could rotate and try. I was usually able to enjoy the baths alone or with another person at most. The ryokan itself is unique in a way where there are no power sockets, phone signals and lights. Corridors were decorated with lamps which creates a warm atmosphere in the dark environment. Meals were delicious, extremely filling and talking with other travelers in the dim environment was extremely new to me. The darkness helps create a sense of anonymity while the lack of technological distractions helped in communication with other travelers. As I was able to speak Japanese, travelling alone here was not a big issue but the staff here are not able to English which makes it difficult for some travelers to make requests or ask questions. There were adequate instructions in English however, which provides the basic knowledge to enjoy a good night stay. Would definitely recommend coming here at least once.

I spent a couple nights here in deep Winter surrounded by snow in every direction. Not really knowing what to expect (no cell reception, no WiFi, no power outlets in my room) I was a bit jarred at first - but after an hour or two and the first soak in one of the 4 amazing baths I didn't really care about that stuff anymore. Aoni Onsen is popular with the locals from surrounding areas - I gather it's something of an institution - and so it should be. The kerosene lamps - yeh, they have a smell only kero lamps can have, but that's part of the charm of the place. Not much that you can do in the immediate area in the middle of winter (unless you have a snowmobile!) but it's definitely worth a visit - it's unique!

At the beginning of April, but it still remained some snow!! Situated in a hollow in the middle of the mountain this Ryokan is perfect for those who want to rest and to take advantage of pleasure of the baths of hot water!! Indeed there is neither electricity (where from the presence of numerous oil lamps) nor network of telephony (and no WiFi either). It is thus a stay completed to disconnect from the modern world. 3 of 4 ponds are very interesting!! And the cooking Kaiseki is so good!!

It is a trek to reach this ryokan but it is worth it. The mountains are gorgeous and Aomori is lovely and cool even in the middle of summer. This ryokan is a bit like a fancy Japanese summer camp. The rooms are simple and rustic and you prepare your own futon and blankets each evening. The kerosene lanterns provides just enough light and adds to the homey country feel. Kerosene lanterns do have a bit of a smell. If you leave the window open, it will hardly be noticeable and the cool night air is wonderful. There are no locks on the doors but there is a small safe in each room. The onsen are very nice and in the summer there are hydrangea bushes covered in giant blue-purple blooms all around the paths and buildings. There is not much to do other than walk the trails and sit in the onsen but that is part of the charm. It is becoming harder and harder to find places where you can totally escaping the encumbrances of modern life and enjoy some quiet time to reflect and just enjoy the moment.
