  My wife and I had an amazing stay at Hotaru, a short shuttle bus away from Yufuin station (included with stay). The onsen facilities and grounds were top-notch. Food was plentiful and amazing--delicious scallops, oyster, beef, fish, especially the mushrooms too--the whole kaiseki experience was great. One interesting difference with Hotaru is that dining is served in a shared dining area rather than in the room (which makes sense because the rooms are spread out far from each other, which enhances privacy). Great English-speaking staff and warm, accommodating service! Highly recommend both a visit to Yufuin and a stay at the excellent Hotaru.

  I tried Japanese style room with private onsen this trip. The view of the mountain from my private onsen was superb. As before, the staff, food and everything about Hotaru was of the highest quality. Thanks again to all at Hotaru, see you again in January.

  Hotaru would be one of the best Ryokan I have stayed at. Everything about Hotaru is exceptional. The willingness of the staff to help in any way is second to none. The excellent food and superb onsen water quality made this a highlight of my trip. The room and the surroundings also help to make this Ryokan a place not to miss. Thanks to all at Hotaru.

  I stayed just one night at Hotaru to get a glimpse of the full ryokan experience, and it was phenomenal. Located just a short cab-ride from Yufuin Station, Hotaru is pleasantly surrounded by forestry and mountains, scenery that adds to the ryokan's quaint walkways. The dinner and breakfast courses were delicious, the onsen was extremely calming and the rooms spotless. Above all however, the staff were very accommodating and helpful, including one employee who was fluent in English and assured me I could ask him anything if I didn't understand something. I highly recommend this ryokan if you happen by the serene town of Yufuin!
