Welcome to Nikko Hoshino Yado. This is a Modern Ryokan with 21 Japanese-style rooms. One of the highlights of Nikko Hoshino Yado is the beautiful, wooden men and women's glass-enclosed hot spring baths which are located in the ryokan's Japanese garden. There are also indoor women and men's hot spring baths and a small outdoor hot spring bath. Nikko Hoshino Yado serves traditional Japanese cuisine including "Oyuba" (a kind of tofu dish). Check-in time is after 15:00 and check-out time is before 10:00 am.

• Spectacularly beautiful inn, with the best breakfast I've ever had in Japan

  I've been to many onsen and ryokan all over Japan, and Hoshinoyado truly stands out. The food was spectacular—every bite was truly delicious and featured the local specialties, and everything was styled with seasonal artistry. I can say without hesitation that the breakfast was the best I've ever eaten in Japan. Plus, our table looked out over a shady Japanese garden that was knee-deep in moss, with a sparkling stream. The inn and room were both pristine, with no shabby corners, and the public bath was inviting—very clean, with every amenity you can imagine, and not blisteringly hot. I've seen everything there is to see in Nikko at least once, but I'd go again just to stay at Hoshinoyado.

  My wife and I have stayed in many ryokans in Japan. We love them. Hoshino Yado has many excellent features. Our standard room (with minimal artwork) had a nice view over the carpark towards hills on the horizon. We were a little surprised the futon wasn't 'packed away' on the second night. The public onsens (male/female) (though rather small) have one side open onto a beautiful garden and pond. The ryokan is also only a short walking distance to the "Shinkyo Bridge" and to other famous World Heritage Temples in Nikko. Excellent location. We very much appreciated the opportunity to quietly drink/smoke (don't worry - very powerful exhaust fans!) in the soundproofed bar. We got the beer from a vending machine and played our own tunes from youtube. The breakfast was excellent. Thank you. We were slightly disappointed by the dinner. To be honest, we thought it was a little 'penny-pinching' to ask guests to pay extra $$$ for 100-200g beef and/or tempura and/or certain other selections. [Instead, we were given a very large portion of tofu (don't misunderstand, we love tofu - we're from Hong Kong!) AND a rather large, bland rice dish that didn't work well with the other offerings. Plain, steamed (Japanese short grain) rice would've been much better!] On our second night, we asked to be exempted from our meal plan so that we might explore a local restaurant. We were most grateful that Hoshino Yado acceded to our request and suggested a fine dining option nearby. We truly appreciated the professionalism and flexibility of the staff. To be honest, we felt this ryokan operated more like a good, medium-sized hotel. [Unfortunately, we're very much hooked on small, traditional (more personalised) ryokan experiences, whether 1 or 5 star.] All-in-all, a nice place to stay in Nikko.

  After almost two weeks in Kyoto and Tokyo, Nikko and the Hoshino Yado were the perfect antidote to crowded cities: the Ryokan picked us up at the train station, they made us feel welcome and had excellent dinner and breakfast. Even in summer, soaking in the Onsen just relieved all stresses. The second evening dinner was served in a private room and outdid the first! We had to leave very early, but the super friendly staff arranged for a transfer to the train station and a packed breakfast to be eaten on the train! Absolutely Outstanding.

  The best Ryokan I have ever tried. Also my relatives and friends were very satisfied. A very nice place in which you should spend at least a couple of nights.

  I invited four friends to discover Japan and have a ryokan experience They loved it very much This ryokan is very close to Nikko treasures and if the outside architecture is a bit without character once inside it's a real nice stay Thanks to japaneseguesthouses staff

  this Guesthouse "Hoshino Yado" is one of the best in Nikko. the staff is very warm and welcoming you, Dinner and Breakfast are amazing and yummie experience, and they have one of the best Onsen I had in Japan Ryokans. I highly recommend to book at least for one night. One further brilliant topic is, that the Ryokan is in a walking distance to the "Shinkyo Bridge" and to all famous World Heritage Temples.
